AED training

In accordance with Washington state law, AED users should receive reasonable instruction in defibrillator use and CPR. When developing a CPR and AED training plan, organizations and companies should consider:

  • Who should receive training?
  • What level of training is necessary for the expected AED user at your location?
  • What resources will best meet your training goals?

There are many organizations that provide CPR training and AED use in the community, including local fire departments, non-profit organizations, and private businesses. A quick internet search will provide a broad selection of resources in King County. Courses vary in course content, certification levels and price, providing many options for all levels of CPR/AED training needs.

If an AED is used in an emergency: Defibrillator users should also be trained on what to do after an AED has been used. AED users and site coordinators should know to:

  • Replace the pads. The device will make a chirping sound until the pads are replaced.

  • NOT remove the battery. All device data will be erased. The battery is not causing the chirping sound.

  • Contact Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Public Health—Seattle & King County as soon as possible at 206-296-4693 or aed@kingcounty.gov Tell them an AED was used and needs a download. Make this call even if no shock was delivered. (Required in King County, WA per RCW 70.54.310). EMS staff will make arrangements to download the AED data report from the device as soon as possible. This information is very important for patient care and quality improvement.
