What is the Basin Steward Program?

Basin Stewards are a team of professionals in the Water and Land Resources Division (WLRD). They specialize in protecting and restoring natural resources in King County. To do this, they use a variety of approaches:

  • Responding to residents' requests for information about stream health and watershed conditions.
  • Helping residents in primarily unincorporated areas to protect and restore water and land.
    • Identifying and securing land purchases under the Land Conservation Initiative.
    • Leading planting projects along streams and wetlands.
  • Building relationships with community members that make restoration and other capital projects possible.
  • Planning with community and other organizations to implement salmon recovery and improve habitat.
  • Coordinating and securing funding for watershed projects.

How the Stewards can help you:

Stewardship

The basin stewards can help answer questions about best management practices. This includes wildlife concerns, land conservation, habitat restoration, regulations, and water quality concerns.

Habitat protection and restoration

The Basin Stewards work with residents and others to develop priority projects. They can help streamside landowners identify resources, including funding for habitat protection.

The Basin Stewards work with other County staff to organize volunteer conservation efforts.
