Reappointed to the Sound Transit Board
On January 8th, I was reappointed to the Sound Transit Board, making me the longest serving current member. My service allows me to strongly advocate for the often forgotten areas within the Regional Transit Authority. As someone who grew up in Pierce County and has represented the South King County region on the King County Council, I will continue to fight for the interests of south sound commuters to ensure they receive the funding and attention they deserve.

Celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I recall the words of Dr. Bernice King when I met her at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. She carried her mother’s and father’s commitment to reconciliation by saying, “Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude.”

Former King County Executive and Governor John Spellman passes away
John Spellman was not only my County Executive and Governor, but he was my friend. We fished together, shared Irish stories, and cheered on our favorite teams. While many today only know of the Kingdome from pictures, the Kingdome was the launching pad for both Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field. Without the determination of John Spellman, the Kingdome would never have existed.

King County Council recognizes special relationship with Republic of Korea; supports the 2018 Winter Olympics
On January 22, 2018, members of the King County Council joined me in welcoming the new Korean Consul General Hyung-jong Lee to King County and recognized Pyeongchang, South Korea, for hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics. It is often said that the 20th century was the century of the Atlantic Ocean, but that the 21st will be the century of the Pacific Ocean. In this spirit we celebrated continued strong relations between our two nations.

On January 29th I hosted my annual South King County Public Leadership Reception. The event brought together more than 70 local public officials and community leaders, as well as King County Executive Dow Constantine, Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht, Director of Elections Julie Wise, and Assessor John Wilson to promote regional cooperation. Special thanks to Shelley Ko and KO-AM TV for hosting this event and all they do for the communities they serve.

Lands Commissioner Franz meets South King County leaders at “Good Eggs” breakfast
On February 21, 2018, Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz joined our "Good Eggs" breakfast to talk recreation, emergency preparedness and wildfire prevention. In her role, Hilary manages 3 million acres of land and 2.6 million acres of aquatic land, providing needed revenue for our state.

Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff joins local leaders to discuss South King County projects
On March 1, Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff discussed the implementation of the $54 billion ST3 plan and the current status of projects in the south sound region at the March “Good Eggs” breakfast. Rogoff and his staff gave an overview of the future projects coming to South King County in both ST2 and ST3, currently the largest transit expansion in the United States. In 2023-2024, Sound Transit will be opening 17 new stations across 3 separate lines, including stations in Kent and Federal Way. The Tacoma Dome Link Extension will bring more light rail stations to the south sound (South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma, and Tacoma Dome) in 2030.

Aquatic Center Hosts PAC-12 Swimming and Diving Championships
On March 1st I had the privilege to welcome the PAC-12 Men's Swimming Championship to Federal Way and thank taxpayers who took a chance financing this facility more than 25 years ago. Today, the investment has paid off. The aquatic center is now a staple in our community that brings future Olympians to Federal Way and generates economic activity across South King County.

Touring Decatur High School’s Horticulture Program
On Friday, March 30, I had the opportunity to tour Decatur High School's horticulture and agriculture program with their teacher, Jordan Lybeck and Rose Ehl of the Federal Way Farmers Market. The program is very popular, and allows students to learn about agriculture by growing food and raising animals. How can anyone resist Ellie Mae, the goat?

IGNITE gala promotes and supports women studying technology
On Saturday, April 15th I attended the IGNITE! annual dinner to support programs that encourage young girls to study technology. South King County should be very proud of Marcella Huang of Thomas Jefferson High School and other local student-scholars. South King County legislators provide analysis of 2018 Legislative Session
At the April 18th “Good Eggs” breakfast, State Sen. Mark Miloscia and State Reps. Pat Sullivan, Mike Pellicciotti and Morgan Irwin shared their perspectives on the recent 2018 Legislative Session. The bi-partisan group discussed the importance of government reform to restore the public’s faith in government, the need to address unfunded mandates to help local governments, and emphasized investment in K-12, job training, and higher education to attract employers and retain jobs in our communities.

Flood and Emergency Preparedness Experts Headline Town Hall
On Wednesday, April 18th I hosted a Flood and Emergency Preparedness Town Hall at Thomas Jefferson High School. Nearly 100 community members, public officials, high school leaders and flood and emergency management experts joined us to discuss steps King County is taking to mitigate the impact of flooding and different ways we all can be prepared in the event a natural disaster strikes. Juror Safety at King County Courthouse
On May 1, the Government Accountability and Oversight Committee, which I chair, heard an update on efforts taken to improve public safety and sanitation for jurors and others around the perimeter of the King County Courthouse. King County Criminal Justice Leaders Discuss “Invisible Issue” of Gun Violence in our Communities
On May 2, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg and King County Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht joined us at Auburn’s Phoenix Rising Café to discuss the steps they’re taking together to address the “invisible issue” of gun violence in our communities, specifically South King County. Half the victims of gun violence in King County are under the age of 25. Together, the Prosecutor and Sheriff are working to develop programs to help break through the culture of violence and lift young people at risk away from gun violence.

Jay’s Garage comes to South King County
On May 10, 2018, Jay Leno was here at Pacific Raceways to film his CNBC show “Jay Leno’s Garage.” South King County may not have Microsoft or the corporate headquarters of Boeing or Amazon, but many of our family-owned businesses, like Pacific Raceways, generate jobs, dollars and attention for our region.

On Saturday, June 2nd, I enjoyed some seafood at the Multi-Service Center’s annual Crab Feed. Every year, this event brings together our community to help those less fortunate. Thank you to the Multi-Service Center for the important services they provide our neighbors.

Lost glasses on Metro buses donated to Auburn Lions Club
On June 19, I had the opportunity to donate more than 1,300 glasses lost on King County Metro buses a new life! Thank you to the Auburn Lions for accepting the donation and hosting me at your weekly meeting. The Lions Club and my office are always on the “lookout” for old glasses in need of a good home. On June 20, BECU CEO Benson Porter met with South King County civic and business leaders at Federal Way’s Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. He discussed BECU’s history, his expectations for the economy as a whole, and the changing demographics and lifestyle preferences of younger generations that are causing the industry to become more digital.

King County Local and Community Services Town Hall
On July 26, I had the privilege to host a Town Hall at Thomas Jefferson High School. The event brought together people from across unincorporated South King County to talk about the unique challenges our communities are facing, and how King County can partner with these local communities to solve our toughest issues. Over $50,000 raised for South County Athletes at Doug Baldwin Breakfast
On July 10, over 250 community members raised over $50,000 for scholar-athletes in the Auburn and Federal Way school districts at the South King County Scholar Athlete Breakfast. The guest speaker was Seattle Seahawk Doug Baldwin at the Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center. Impressive speech, impressive turnout!

On July 15th, I was the honorary “steward” for the 7th race at Emerald Downs. I enjoyed sharing time with the track’s trumpeter and Julie Krone, the first female winner of a “triple crown” race. Horse racing provides thousands of jobs in our region.

Ballot Drop Box Added in Auburn
On August 6, 2018, just before primary election day, South King County leaders cut the ribbon on a new ballot drop box at the Auburn Park and Ride. I had the chance to visit the site with King County Director of Elections Julie Wise and Auburn City Councilmember Larry Brown.

Shredding Event at Federal Way Farmers Market
On Saturday, August 11, 2018, 150 community members joined us at a Mobile Shredding Event. Those who stopped by were able to shred documents with personal information and learn new strategies to prevent identity theft at no personal cost. Thanks to the Federal Way Farmers Market for permitting us to set up near them.

On August 15, 2018, Northwest Seaport Alliance CEO, John Wolfe, joined us at the Phoenix Rising Café in Auburn to speak about the important role the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma play in our regional economy. 40% of jobs in Washington are tied to trade, and our ports serve as a gateway not only for agriculture and industry across our state, but across our country.

Youth and Amateur Sports Grants Awarded to Federal Way Organizations
On August 17, 2018, I presented two grants of $50,000 each to youth-oriented South King County organizations. The grants, funded by the King County Youth and Amateur Sports Fund, will support the “Challenger” project for the Federal Way National Little League which will make baseball more accessible for disabled youth in our community and fund educational enhancements in the lobby of the King County Aquatic Center.

On August 25, 2018, we lost a true American hero. From the Hanoi Hilton to the United States Senate, we are all the better for your service. Rest in peace, Senator John McCain.
Federal Lions Car Show Honors Police and Donates to Community
On August 25, 2018, I attended the 14th annual Federal Way Lions Club Car Show, and presented the “Top Cop” award to Federal Way’s Tim Burrell. After the award presentation, he showed me his red 1938 Oldsmobile F Series. Thank you for serving our community, Tim!
Rhythm and Brews Festival Benefits Symphony’s Youth Education Programs
On September 9, the Federal Way Symphony’s Rhythm and Brews Festival brought together every generation at Town Square Park. 100% of proceeds benefit the Federal Way Symphony’s music, education and performance programs. As Aretha Franklin once said: music is uplifting, encouraging and strengthening!

On September 10, 2018, The King County Administration building was renamed in honor of former King County Executive and Governor John Spellman. John was a visionary leader who served the people of King County with dignity and respect. John was all about faith, family and friends, and we are all better for his service.

Lion’s Club Eye Glasses Donation
This summer, I turned over 1,000 “lost” glasses from King County Metro buses to the Federal Way Lions Club. Lion club members across the country undertake sight-related service projects to help the blind and visually-impaired in honor of the legacy of Helen Keller. Thanks to the Federal Way Lions for all they do to support our local community programs.

On September 19, 2018, Bob Wallace, CEO of Wallace Properties, joined my monthly “Good Eggs” breakfast. Bob provided an overview of the current business and real estate climate in the region, and gave his thoughts on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for South King County’s economy.

Jen Cohen headlines annual Boys and Girls Club Breakfast
On September 20, more than $70,000 was raised at the annual Boys and Girls Club breakfast for South King County youth. I was proud to host six South King County girls high school soccer teams and honor Emerald Downs founder Ron Crockett for a lifetime of philanthropy and achievement. Taste of Federal Way at Federal Way Farmers Market
On Saturday, September 22, I was a judge at the Taste of Federal Way during the Federal Way Farmer’s Market. Nine local restaurants offered food to benefit a local non-profit and highlight our community’s diversity.

In 1997, only one person was willing to take the risk of owning an NFL team when the roof was literally falling in on sports in Seattle. Paul Allen was that one person. Every family that comes together to watch the Seahawks play, whether in Seattle or in London, in their living rooms or at CenturyLink, should forever be thankful to Paul Allen and the Allen family. When there was not a lot to celebrate on the front page, the Seahawks gave us a lot to celebrate on the sports page. Thank you, Paul. We will miss you.

Opioid Discussions at the White House
On October 11th, I visited the White House for an Opioid Conference and had the chance to meet Vice President Mike Pence. Opioid addiction is a serious public health crisis that directly or indirectly affects every neighborhood in our region. It does not discriminate: blue collar, white collar or no collar. I will continue to work with our federal, state and local leaders to find solutions to this devastating crisis.

On November 7th, Congressman Adam Smith joined me to discuss the midterm elections and his priorities for representing South King County in our nation’s capital. He emphasized the need to approach problems to find solutions despite our disagreements and stressed the importance of job training programs for youth and young adults.

Federal Way Performing Arts Foundation Gala
On November 9th, the performers from Under the Streetlamp rocked the Federal Way PAEC with great music (from an era when one could actually understand the lyrics), entertainment and humor. We need to support more arts in the suburbs!!
King County Budget Appropriates $3 million to Provide Resources for Low-Income Families
On November 13th, the Metropolitan King County Council appropriated $3 million in funding to help the Federal Way-based non-profit, Friends United to Shelter the Indigent, Oppressed and Needy (FUSION), build a Family Transitional Housing and Community Services Center in partnership with Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Federal Way.

Auburn Chamber Holiday Event
On November 17th, I was pleased to join Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus, Sarah Moore and Councilmember Martin Moore of Federal Way at this year’s Auburn Chamber Holiday Party at the Junior Achievement Building. The Auburn chamber knows that 70 percent of new jobs comes from small businesses!
Remembering U.S. President George H.W Bush
President Bush was a tireless public servant who never turned down a call to duty. He viewed himself as a man “who sees life in terms of missions—missions defined and missions completed.” President Bush’s final mission has been completed and his service and leadership will be missed.

On December 7th, I attended the dedication of the renovated Federal Way High School. I appreciate the commitment of Dr. Tammy Campbell to the student scholars of her district, and welcomed the opportunity to spend time with the Eagle and former Mayor Mike Park.

On December 10th, we recognized Dick’s Drive-In, owned by the Spady family, for nearly 65 years of community service, philanthropy, civic engagement, and great burgers for the whole family.

Veteran’s Job Fair and Workshop
On December 11th, I sponsored a veterans’ job fair and workshop for veterans in our community. Over twenty-four South King County exhibitors provided information and opportunities for the veterans who attended. Washington House Speaker Previews Upcoming Legislative Session
On December 12th, Washington State Speaker of the House Frank Chopp joined me to discuss his priorities for the upcoming legislative session. Frank discussed the importance of prioritizing funding for mental health treatment, the need to improve workforce preparation programs, and his experience coalition building.
