Suicide Prevention Month gun buyback event

In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Public Health – Seattle & King County and the King County Sheriff's Office are hosting a gun buyback event Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 8 am to 12 pm at Shoreline Community College. 

This event provides a safe and anonymous way for King County residents to dispose of unwanted firearms, which can help reduce the risk of them being used in a crisis or falling into the wrong hands. 

The event will be a drive-thru, where participants remain in their vehicles. They will be directed to a station for firearm intake and gift card distribution.

No personal information is required to turn in a firearm.

You will receive gift cards in varying amounts, based on the type of firearm surrendered. For example: 

  • $25 for antique firearms, junk guns, inoperable firearms, receivers/frames only, and bump-fire stocks 
  • $50 for muzzle-loading firearms manufactured after 1941 
  • $100 for rifles, shotguns, .22LR weapons firearms, and revolvers  
  • $200 for pistols 
  • $300 for AR-15s, AK-47s, and machine guns  
  • $0 for toy guns, BB/pellet guns, homemade firearms, non-firing objects that look like firearms, ammunition, magazines, other ammunition-feeding devices, and firearm accessories including scopes, optical sights, lights, or other accessories attached to a firearm

One gift card will be issued per firearm.

Firearms must be unloaded and placed in the trunk of your car. You may not handle the firearm once you enter the event site.

You will remain in your vehicle at all times. A law enforcement officer will safely remove the firearm from your trunk, and you will then receive a gift card based on the type of firearm you have turned in.

Yes, multiple people can bring firearms in the trunk of the same car. We will give all gift cards to the driver, who will be responsible for distributing them to the passengers.

Once you have turned in your firearm and received your gift card, the King County Sherrif's Office will destroy it in accordance with state law. Firearms that are classified as antiques, curios, or relics by state and federal law will not be destroyed. These items will be auctioned off and shipped out of state.
