Monitoring and Maintenance Program

The Program monitors and maintains habitat restoration projects designed and implemented by the Ecological Restoration and Engineering Services (ERES) Unit. We make sure restoration projects meet their goals and do not increase risk to people or infrastructure. We also inform the design of future projects and help to identify potential adaptive management needs.

What we do

Monitoring

We evaluate project outcomes through studies, experiments, and risk management inspections. We report our findings to design teams, funders, and other interested partners. Monitoring allows us to:

  1. Measure performance and determine if projects meet their goals,
  2. Show that projects meet permit requirements, and
  3. Improve the cost-effectiveness and outcomes of future projects.

If a project is not performing well, we document the problem and try to identify the cause. We work with the project design team to find a solution and take corrective actions as needed.

Maintenance

We maintain projects for 3-10 years after project implementation. Annual maintenance helps to ensure projects meet their goals and required permit conditions. Maintenance includes plant establishment care, weed control, and plant replacement at completed projects. Maintenance does not expand the scope of existing projects or complete unfinished ones.
