When to call 9-1-1

Have you ever wondered if you should call 9-1-1? Since 9-1-1 is for emergencies only, it helps to understand when to call and when not to call.

An emergency is any serious situation where a law enforcement officer, fire fighter, or emergency medical help is needed right away. Call the non-emergency line at 206-296-3311 if you do not require an immediate response.

Did you know?

  • More than 5,000 9-1-1 calls are made every day in King County.
  • Approximately half of those calls are for actual emergencies.
  • 22% are from people requesting information or calling about a non-emergency.
  • 28% are accidental.

If you aren’t sure if your situation is an emergency, you should err on the side of safety and call 9-1-1. If the 9-1-1 call-taker determines there is no immediate response required, they'll route you to the correct service.
