Concealed Pistol Licenses

Learn how to obtain or renew a Concealed Pistol License through the King County Sheriff's office.

License requirements

You are required to have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) if you:

  • Carry a pistol concealed on your person.
  • Have a loaded pistol in your vehicle.

General requirements

  • You must be at least 21 years of age
  • You must have a current driver’s license or state-issued ID.
    • Passports or military IDs are not accepted in lieu of state-issued ID.
    • If you have a Driver’s License or State ID issued by a state other than Washington, you may have a 60 day wait for an original application.
  • Your residential address must be up to date with Department of Licensing.
  • If you are a Permanent Resident, you must provide your original Immigration issued Permanent Resident Card at time of application.
  • You must live in King County, or meet the requirements for non-residents below.

Non-King County residents

  • If you live in Washington, but outside King County, you will need to apply with your local law enforcement agency.
  • If you live outside Washington, you can apply at any local law enforcement agency, including the King County Sheriff.
  • You must appear in person during business hours at the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle or any of our local locations (by appointment only).
  • The requirements are the same as with Original Concealed Pistol Licenses, and the fee is the same. The waiting period to receive the Concealed Pistol License for non-residents is 60 days.
  • If you are a Non-Immigrant Alien you must bring the following original documents (no copies):
    • Current Alien Firearm License
    • Passport and VISA
    • Most recent I-94
    • A Washington State issued hunting license or proof of membership to a Sport Shooting Club. 

Disqualifications

You won’t qualify for a CPL if you:

  • Have a revoked concealed pistol license
  • Are subject to a court order or injunction concerning the possession of firearms
  • Are free on bond or personal recognizance while awaiting trial, appeal, or sentencing for a felony offense
  • Have an outstanding warrant for your arrest for a felony or misdemeanor
  • Were ordered to forfeit a firearm within the last 12 months
  • Were convicted of a felony. To restore your rights, contact the courts where your conviction is or the superior court where you live

Waiting period

The waiting period to receive the Concealed Pistol License is 30 to 60 days. Licenses are sent in the mail.

If your drivers license or state ID is issued by a state other than Washington, you may have a 60 day wait.

New Concealed Pistol License 

We process Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPLs) for people who live anywhere in King County. We also process applications for Non-Immigrant Aliens who can provide the required documentation.

You must schedule an appointment to apply for a new license in Washington.

Complete the application

Download and complete the King County Sheriff Concealed Pistol License application (249 KB). You will need to bring the completed application to your appointment.

Schedule an appointment online

Any King County resident can schedule an appointment online for the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle, Burien Precinct or Maple Valley Precinct.

If the scheduling calendar is full, you will  see the message: “Sorry, no days currently available." The schedule will automatically refresh as soon as appointments become available.

King County Courthouse/Downtown Seattle

Renew or replace your Concealed Pistol License 

At the time you apply, you must meet all the requirements for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

  • To renew a CPL, you must apply within 90 days before or after your current license's expiration date.
  • You can request a license replacement if your CPL is lost, stolen, or damaged before its expiration date.

If you do not meet these requirements, you will have to apply for a new CPL.

You must submit your renewal or replacement application in person, and you must submit your application yourself. No exceptions.

Your application may be denied if all elements of the applicable process are not met at the time of submittal.

Complete the application

Download and complete the King County Sheriff Concealed Pistol License application (249 KB). Select the appropriate option for "Renew" or "Replace" on page 3. You will need to bring the completed application to your appointment.

Renew or replace your CPL without an appointment

If you want to renew or replace your Concealed Pistol License (CPL) at the King County Courthouse (Seattle) or in Maple Valley, you do not need an appointment.

King County Courthouse (Downtown Seattle)

Fees and payment methods

  • $49.25 for originals, meaning either you have never had a license, or your license has been expired more than 90 days.
  • $32.00 for renewals, if license is not expired and within 90 days prior to its expiration.
  • $42.00 for late renewals, if license is no more than 90 days past its expiration.
  • $10.00 for replacements, if license is valid and not expired.
  • $84.25 for alien firearm license, includes license and fingerprinting fees (for a 2-year license) Click here for more info.

Payment method requirements

  • Check, money order or dashier's check must be for exact amount only. We are unable to provide change for any over payment.
  • Personal check/money order requirements (for all locations):
    • Check/money order must be made payable to King County Sheriff’s Office or KCSO.
    • Checks must be preprinted and match the name on the license.
    • If payment is to be applied to more than one license, all names must be pre-printed on the check.
  • King County Sheriff’s Office will not accept 3rd party checks [question for SME: does this include cashier's checks?]

Fees for ACH and credit/debit card payments

  • For  ACH (eCheck) payments: There is a flat $1.00 fee per eCheck processed.
  • For credit or debit card payments: Fee is 2.35% of the total due, with a minimum fee charge of $2.00.
