Project overview

King County repairs and resurfaces roadways so roads last longer and are less expensive to maintain. The resurfacing also means fewer potholes and bumps for travelers.

Roads are selected for resurfacing each year based on their condition and on available funding.

Scheduled work dates are weather sensitive and subject to change.

What to expect in 2026

Crews anticipate using asphalt overlay to resurface roads in 2026. An overlay, also known as a top coat or resurfacing, is a process where a new layer of asphalt is applied over an existing paved surface. This technique is typically used when the existing pavement has minor damage like cracking, potholes, or mild deterioration, but the underlying base is still structurally sound.

Work will occur Monday to Friday generally between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Hours will be adjusted slightly as needed to avoid peak travel periods.

If at all possible, the contractor will place electronic message boards in the area at least 72 hours prior to the lane restrictions. Please check MyCommute for the latest information.

On most roads only the main travel lanes will be repaved. The center turn lanes and shoulders will not be repaved unless they are in poor condition. We will only repave the lanes that need to be repaired. Repaving the areas that are in the worst condition allows us to repave as many roads as possible without exceeding our yearly paving budget.

King County contractors also repair city (incorporated) roads

Smaller cities are invited to add roads to the contract with King County. For 2026, Normandy Park, Maple Valley, and Lake Forest Park have expressed interest. Questions about pavement repairs in these communities should be directed to the local cities.
